The Effects of Domestic Violence
- Harm to Others. You may harm your spouse, significant other, or children.
- Family Problems. Children who are exposed to domestic violence can suffer long-term emotional consequences.
- Damaged Relationships. Your relationships suffer.
- Financial Difficulties. If you lose
control and break things, you suffer financially.
- Poor Decisions. You may make decisions
you regret later, because you were angry at the time.
- Legal Difficulties. Assault and property damage can lead to severe legal consequences.
Reduce the Risk of Domestic Violence
You cannot eliminate anger. Feeling angry from time
to time is part of being human. But you can learn to channel your emotions and reduce the risk of domestic violence -
- Identify Triggers, Thoughts and Feelings.
To properly manage anger, you must be able to identify and understand
the triggers, thoughts and feelings that lead to anger.
- Coping Responses. These can include
the traditional "counting to 10" as well as more advanced
techniques such as learning ways to cue yourself to stop and think about
the consequences of an action before acting.
- Change Thought Patterns. Some patterns
of thinking contribute to uncontrolled anger. For example, if you think
that you are always right and everyone else is always wrong, you are
setting yourself up for continual conflict. To better manage your anger,
you must learn to identify and change unproductive thought patterns.
- Assertiveness Skills. By making "I" statements and clearly communicating your boundaries, you can protect
yourself without attacking. You can learn when you need to stand up
for yourself and when it is not necessary.
- Relaxation Techniques. You can use
breathing exercises and guided imagery to reduce stress, generate calm,
and dissipate anger.
Benefits of Domestic Violence Treatment
- Reduce the risk of harming others.
- Fewer legal problems
- Improved relationships
